Inscribed on verso with pencil: Drawn from the balcony of the Strongylos house. The ancient Venetian tower, once part of the town wall, is not visible from the street. There is an inhabited hovel inside the tower. My second attempt of drawing from nature. KYRENIA. October 1952

Description:

The watercolour portrays one of the towers of the original medieval fortifications of Kyrenia. Nothing of the walls remains apart from the castle itself and remnants of towers. Locally, this tower is known as kulas. A number of back gardens appear elevated from the street which is almost invisible in the painting. This was intended to prevent the erosion of soil since Kyrenia rests on land sloping towards the sea. The painting was executed at a time when modernism was reaching Cyprus. Thus, the architecture of the houses deviates from the traditional Cypriot styles. The two or three storey buildings, the flat roofs and sharp cubic structures lack the charm of the traditional home. The picture is executed from a lower standpoint in the direction of the sea and looking towards the mountains. A peak appearing in the background defines the artist’s position. The watercolour is more in line with the style of a detailed drawing rather than a free watercolour. Much importance is given to detail and painstaking efforts have been made to exhibit precision. It tallies with the inscription by the artist admitting to this watercolour being her second attempt of painting from nature.
