Description:
Gwendolen Frere was the daughter of Judge Bertle Frere who arrived in 1897 and took up judicial duty in the British administration of Cyprus. She was an amateur artist who executed a series of watercolours of Nicosia and Kyrenia. This watercolour is a view of one of the mahallades, neibourhoods of Nicosia known for its stone masons. The neighbourhood was known as ‘small Kaimakli’ to distinguish it from the nearby Buyuk Kaimakli. The skyline is pierced by the tall palm trees of Nicosia.
