Description:
The drawing is of a sixteenth century building which has received a second floor in 1738 when it passed into the hands of Christian owners, according to a plaque that once stood above the entrance, bearing a cross and the aforementioned date. The elaborate entrance of carved sandstone is of clearly Gothic style, while the half-opened dilapidated windows suggest abandonment. The artist clearly wants his work to be a testimony of what Cyprus is rapidly loosing. The derelict state in which the building appears represents a cry to restoration and a yearning for the past. Both are revealing of attitudes harboured by the sophisticated urbanized classes towards what they perceive to be their ‘heritage’.
