Description:

This is one of the most interesting and rare engravings of the interior of St. Lazarus church in Larnaca. The figures of a Greek Orthodox priest and that of a woman in exquisite costume, quintessentially Greek and worked to the last detail, are included in an atmosphere of devoutness created by the artist. One gets the impression that this corner of the church is dark and only lit by the natural light of a small opening in the wall and the warm flicker of candles. Most impressive is a huge marble medieval cistern, then used as a baptismal font, and now resting in the church’s museum. In the centre stands a tripod on a marble base known as a triskelion which used to receive processional icons. The surrounding walls are covered with icons adding to those placed against icon stands and illuminated by hanging lanterns. An array of other icons, processional crosses and other liturgical items are scattered in various parts of the church. A candelabrum, large candles placed on the floor and a psalter complement the picture.
