Description:
Codrington spent much time in Cyprus and travelled all over the island. His brushes and palette were employed to glorify the light and the colours of the landscape and to record most of the important monuments. Famagusta at night features the silhouettes of the Latin Cathedral of St Nicholas (Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque) and Church of St George of the Greeks with only some palm trees in between the two monuments. It gives the feeling of an abandoned town in a deep sleep in time. This is an almost haunting picture of the ancient ruins. The successful use of shades of grey and dark mauve attest to the clear moonlit nights of Cyprus and achieve the correct effect.
