Description:
The Russian artist Leon Bakst, visited Cyprus in the latter years of his life, in 1921, after his trip to Greece. Much impressed by the Cypriot statues of korae, he was inspired by them for the costumes of many of his theatre productions. In the book The Story of Leon Bakst’s Life, Benjamin Blom, N.Y. 1971, pl. 27, 28 the artist made use of a number of the pencil sketches from his little pocket sketchbook in order to achieve the sought effects, especially the hairstyles, for his productions of Greek tragedies and ballets.
