Cyprus with Cactus

Creator:

White, Ethelbert (1891-1972)

Ημερομηνία:

ca. 1950

Places:

Cyprus

Description:

A member of the London group since 1915, the artist was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy. His paintings were used by the Cyprus Government Office in London to attract tourists, especially his views of Kyrenia. This watercolour reveals his diverse styles and follows the strong colours of the London group. In terms of style, it constitutes one of the first modernist pictures of the island, yet portraying a very traditional village. In the forefront, is the cactus tree of prickly pears found all over the island and often used as boundary hedges. Further inward, are humble whitewashed houses with flat roofs, making a stark contrast with the strong blue of the sky.
