Description:
During the early part of the 20th century the colonial government made efforts to promote the island for reasons of trade. The Empire Marketing Board sent artists to portray the island for these purposes. Keith Henderson produced many works of art in the form of paintings, watercolours and posters to this effect. In most cases his artwork is imbued with oriental elements. The poster is one such example. A caravan of camels loaded with products (the oriental aspect) is approaching the capital Nicosia. With the Kyrenia mountains as a backdrop, the town is presented at the horizon. It is surrounded by its walls from which protrude a number of minarets. In the center stands the cathedral of St. Sophia. It must be winter for the riders wear long sleeves. The land is arid, there is sparse greenery in the picture and the shades of the camels attest to a sunny day.
