Description:

This pencil drawing depicts an elderly priest, a Turkish zaptieh (policeman) and a couple of village notables. A woman responsible for the elderly priest’s care appears in the background. It must be a rather formal meeting as the zaptieh appears reading a paper before the rest. Before the British established many of the island’s modern civic structures, villages were run by a group of usually wealthy headmen led by the parish priest. The hybridity of the attire worn by the men in the drawing is indicative of the early British colonial period when the traditional boots and pantaloons were complemented by western coats.
