Description:
This engraving affords an insider’s view of the Ottoman castle in Larnaca, used in the early days of the arrival of the British in Cyprus as their depot. A number of figures, both British and local Turks, are busy with their chores. There is a well in the centre and a staircase leading to the upper floors. A Turkish woman covered with a white çarçaf has her face uncovered and does not seem to be bothered by the presence of men. This points to the fact that Turkish Cypriot women were more liberal than their counterparts in the rest of the Islamic world.
