Description:
The story of the tragic figure of the last Venetian queen of Cyprus Caterina Cornaro reappeared on the European art scenes during the revival of the historical painting. This coincided with the publication by continental writers during the second half of the 19th century of extensive historical and archeological accounts. Historians and artists resurrected episodes of gallantry and the intricacies of the Venetian court in Cyprus. Caterina Cornaro became the inspiration of many such artists which chose to depict portraits of the queen in various stages of her life but also episodes from her court. The engraving presents the queen at a young age following a reputation of great beauty but dresses her in an attire which does not correspond to those worn in Cyprus in the 15th century.
