Camp of the 1st York Regiment, Troodos.

Creator:

Rudyerd, Reginald Barrows (1848-1888)

Ημερομηνία:

1888

Description:

During the hot summer months in Cyprus, the British administration and troops moved to the highlands of Troodos mountains (Mount Olympus) where they set up temporary camp. This way they avoided the heat and fevers of Limassol and Larnaca. A cottage was built in 1880 along the lines of a Scottish hunting lodge about half a mile southwest of the temporary government offices to function as the Governor’s summer residence. The watercolour gives a bird's eye view of one of the camps nearby. Typical are the white tents accommodating the soldiers and the rigid stone lines created on the ground. It is characteristic of authoritarian regimes such as military establishments to exercise power on space through a rigid allotment of the ground. Furthermore, the viewer can appreciate the species of pinus negra, the typical pine tree to be found in the forests of Troodos with its branches leaning towards the ground.
