Description:

In 1907, an asbestos mine was opened in the heart of the Troodos mountains just above the village of Amiantos (asbestos, in Greek). Raw asbestos was exported from Cyprus by the Asbestos Ltd Inc. In 1916, an Italian company installed an aerial tramway from the village of Amiantos down to a Limassol pier which, to this day, bears the name Enaerios (aerial). It started operating in 1924 and covered an area of 5000 feet to the sea. From the pier, the ore was loaded on ships which transported it to America. The poster portrays exactly this point in Limassol: Sacks of asbestos loaded on aerial cars slide down to the pier through overland cables where a ship is waiting to receive them. Warehouses stand on the seafront housing products for export. In the background, an areal glimpse of Limassol’s seafront is provided. The poster has the characteristic title of ‘Fourteen miles down to the sea… from a mile in the sky’. Although accurate in all other respects, the view of Limassol provided in the poster is certainly not a realistic one. The old town with its minarets lies on the west of the Enaerios pier and not on the east, as presented in the poster.
