Description:
Hermione Hammond was the wife of a British administrator who served in Cyprus in 1951. The oil painting is of a small house in a large estate called Adah Ciftlic, just under St. Hilarion mountain. Subsequently, this small house was replaced by a manor house belonging to the owners. Hammond successfully captured the colours of Cyprus in winter when the mountains acquire a grey blue tint. The house in the foreground is whitewashed as were most of the houses in Kyrenia. It has a red tiled roof which starts appearing regularly in the lowlands of Cyprus in the 20th century. The house was once the summer residence of the Governor of Cyprus Sir Ronald Storrs.
