Did you know? The Greek Cypriot delegation to London 1918-1919

During the early twentieth century attempts were made by the Greek Cypriots to unify the island with Greece. Amongst them, in November 1918 and for a whole year a deputation of Greek Cypriots visited London and requested a meeting with the British Foreign Office. They were not successful and their request fell upon deaf ears.

Cypriot members of the 3rd Cypriot Deputation to London on 21 November 1918 - 12 December 1919 are seen in this black and white photograph. Back standing row from left Neoptolemos Paschalis (Nicosia-Kyrenia), Nicolaos Kleanthis Lanitis (Limassol-Paphos), Georgios Emfietzis (Famagusta), Philios Zannetos (Larnaca-Famagusta), Demosthenis Chr. Severis (Nicosia-Kyrenia). Front seating row from left Louis Evangelos Louizou (Larnaca-Famagusta), Neofytos Nicolaides (Limassol-Paphos), Archbishop Kyrillos III, Theofanis Theodotou (Nicosia-Kyrenia).

The ‘Did You Know’ series is made possible with the support of OPAP (Cyprus) and Active Citizens Fund.
