Joseph Vermeiren (d.1990) was a Flemish geologist born in Bruges, Belgium.
He studied mining and engineering at Louvain University and came to Cyprus in the 1930s to work in the mines. He married Agni Markides, a Greek Cypriot.
He had a great love of painting and, during his stay on the island, found many different pigments which he would later use. He travelled extensively through Cyprus and recorded views of landscapes, monuments and portraits. He held several of his exhibitions on the island and participated in many others.
This watercolour exposes a hillside near the village of Lapithos and against the Kyrenia mountains. The area is known for its fertility and prosperity. Many orchards and farms were to be seen contributing to the village’s affluence and size.
