Did you know? Biddulph Gate

High Commissioner of Cyprus Sir Henry Ernest Gascoyne Bulwer, GCMG (1886-1892) came from a Norfolk gentry family based at Heydon near Norwich. He was very interested in archaeology, and when he saw the entrance to a small palace, according to Gibelin the palazzo, in Famagusta, he realised that it was endangered. So, Bulwer bought the plot of land on which the stone entrance stood, in order to save it. In his will, he bequeathed this plot of land to the government under the condition that they will always keep the gate safe.

Unfortunately, today, the gate bears by mistake the name of another high Commissioner and it is called Biddulph’s Gate.

The ‘Did You Know’ series is made possible with the support of OPAP (Cyprus) and Active Citizens Fund.
