Description:
The artist’s works are of a historical value as they portray Cyprus of the early twentieth century from a Greek Cypriot point of view. The building of the old Archbishopric is an amalgamation of different architectural styles dating from different periods of the island’s history. The classical capitals on which the Gothic arches rest have been collected from the ruins of ancient sites on the island. The hayat and the extended roofs display some of the most typical features of Ottoman architecture as do the shutters. The iron railings and arch over the staircase were added at a later stage. In fact, the date 1864 which is surmounted by a cross, is associated with renovations of the building. The iron arch has been removed long ago. The Canadian windmill in the background is one of many introduced to the islands by the British. It adds an almost surrealist dimension to the scene to couple its partly oriental aspect. This work by Kissonergis is a clear example of the influence which the British watercolour school had on the artist.
