Description:
Phocion Demetriades, known also as Phocos, was one of the most celebrated cartoonists in Greece. He was born in Istanbul, worked at the National Bank of Greece and he was a schoolbook illustrator. He was primarily a political cartoonist known for associating Greek Prime Minister Tsatsos with a hen (to poulli tou, a pun on the word ‘bird’ to mean ‘cock’). The postcard alludes to Greece’s contribution during WWII on the side of Britain to bitterly complain about Britain’s opposition to Greek Cypriot demands for enosis, or union with Greece, in the 1950’s as expressed in the United Nations.
