The photographs in this collection are part of an extensive body of works by the photographer Edmond Torikian which includes thousands of individual images taken mainly in Cyprus. Torikian, one of the founders of the Cyprus Photographic Society, was a professional photographer whose works include advertising and promotional material, public events, celebrations and ceremonies, as well as, more personal photographs of friends, family and daily life in Cyprus between the 1950s and 1970s.

This particular selection entitled, Edmond Torikian Collection – Urban and Rural views of Cyprus, includes 256 black and white and colour images depicting both urban and rural views of Cyprus before 1974. The many aerial images, punctuated with terrestrial views, of cities and villages from the mountains to the shores, gives a stunning overview of the island during this time.

The images that comprise the online collection were reproduced from the original roll films. The titles were taken from inscriptions when available. Where no inscriptions were available the titles were generated by the cataloguer describing the depicted subject.
