A holiday album: Cyprus in the 1930s
Among CVARs numerous holiday albums created by British travelers and officers to Cyprus throughout the 20th century lies a particularly interesting album that carries the title ‘Cyprus’. This album, from an unknown source, containing 234 black and white photographs, and photographic postcards, that depict the holiday of a small group of tourists visiting Cyprus in 1928. It begins with their journey by boat to Cyprus then follows them to popular tourist destinations such as Kyrenia harbour, St. Hilarion castle, Aphrodite’s rock, the city of Nicosia, as well as many villages, monasteries and ancient sites around the island. Featured activities include picnics, camping, donkey rides and painting the mountain scenery in the Troodos. Further subject matter includes pictures of local people such as shepherds, monks and their novices, trail guides and traditional dancers.
The images will soon become available online through CVAR’s website to be located in the photographic collections section. The digital images that will comprise this online collection were reproduced from the original black and white prints. The titles were taken from inscriptions in the album when available. Where no inscriptions were available the titles were generated by the cataloguer describing the depicted subject.
