The Community Council of Omodos and the researcher-artist and creator of a traditional weaving workshop Mrs. Julia Astreou-Christophorou, author, invite you to the presentation of the book, “The Bibilla of Omodos”.
The book “The Bibilla of Omodos” is the result of many years of research, at a time when the production of this masterful lace is near to eclipse. It is mainly based on testimonies gathered from the last makers of Omodos, who talk about the secrets and techniques of bibilla making, its designs, development and marketing. They also talk about the role and place of knotted lacing in their daily life, about their life in the vineyards, their responsibilities in the family and in the society of Omodos in general.
The author places the study of the Bibilla of Omodos in the broader context of its evolution in Cyprus; she compares it with its counterparts in the Eastern Mediterranean and in Europe in general. The first chapters deal with the history of lace, with references to the making of nets and the development of knotted lace items, starting from the antiquity to the present day.
Particularly useful in the book are descriptions and diagrams of the technique and basic designs for making the Bibilla of Omodos.
The book will be presented by Rita Severi, Art Historian and Executive Director of the Centre for Visual Arts and Research. The event is under the auspices of the Honorable Deputy Minister of Culture, Dr. Vasiliki Kassianidou.
