Sneak Peek: Reapers

Not much is known about this painting, despite its beauty. This is a pen and ink sketch of reapers in the fields. The women wear their hair long and plaited, as it was the custom back then.

Hermione Hammond was married to a British administrator who served in Cyprus in 1951. She was an artist in a wide range of media, except acrylic, born in Hexham, Northumberland. She studied at Chelsea Polytechnic with Henry Moore and Graham Sutherland and at the Royal Academy Schools with Walter Russell and Tom Monnington. She also studied etching in night classes. She was most famous for her paintings of London damaged by the Blitz during World War II.
