US Consul General Taylor Belcher wrote to the Secretary of State reporting on press responses to British interference in local tensions:

Times of Cyprus features article by Driberg, Brit Labor Party Chairman. He states Greek ministers informed him they took gravest view on latest Brit move to implement “plan”, and that if Turk representative sent to Cyprus were murdered by EOKA nothing could prevent war between Turkey and Greece. Driberg also reports British plan bring Makarios back Cyprus during September so he can be there when Turk rep arrives – hoping thereby to avoid future bloodshed. Driberg feels unlikely that Makarios will allow himself to be put on spot in this fashion and that his return could not be dictated to suit convenience of British Govt.
