The Church in Cyprus made special demands of the people, as noted by the American missionary Lorenzo Warriner Pease:

Yesterday Mr. Thompson and Mr. Charalambos removed to Scala. The Archdeacon of the Bishop came to make ζητείας of wheat oil and wine at this village. He says that he gets very little, that where he had received before 40 modia, he now receives only 5 and that the people say to him, instead of the bishop expecting to be fed by us, we ought to receive from him. The bishop is expected tomorrow, when the people will be expected to give 5p apiece, even if they are obliged to steal.

Mr. Andreadis told me tonight that they are hoping in the course of a year or so to make still greater changes in the island. Their eyes are fixed on a reform among ecclesiastics. They wished to give the Bishops all a regular salary so that they need no longer be under the necessity of begging ζητείας etc. The funds will be the income arising from monasteries etc. which will be sufficient for this purpose. The Bishop of Citium will probably consent as the throne is in debt, the Bishop of Paphos, as he is poor and the Archbishop will consent to what these do, so that the Bishop of Cerenia as a matter of course will yield. They will give say, 3000 or 4000p a month.
