Swedish archaeologist Alfred Westholm suffered from another epidemic in Cyprus:

As usual we sat on the beach smoking our lunchtime pipes. Suddenly my body was assaulted by an all too familiar tremor, which initiated a rather severe attack of malaria most likely to do with something like sunstroke. My dizziness and my feverish fantasies were more energetic than ever and surely only thanks to Vivi’s pleading persuasion could they get me on board the boat and brought to land into the tent by the Limniti shore. Here I was so well cared for that by evening I was completely myself again and could sit at table. The next day I was completely recovered, but on Sunday I had to crawl back into bed again for a new minor onslaught after a charming boat ride to Vouni, which was photographed from the sea.
