Sir Garnet Wolseley sent off the last convicts:
The remaining 32 convicts, who were convicted of crimes before we came here, were to have embarked, in accordance with an agreement I made with Layard, on board a Turkish-man-of-war now at Larnaca. I sent them there but the Captain has refused to take them on board unless I tell him their destination, which I cannot. There is some underhand dodge at work of which I suspect Rifat to be the author.
