Rupert Gunnis, ADC to Governor Ronald Storrs, arrived in Cyprus and noted his first impressions:

Arrived about 7.30am off Famagusta. Put on my uniform which looked very well. We went right along the quay. The C.S. Popham Lott and his ADC, Montagu came aboard. We landed at 10.am and inspected guard of honour, presentations and speeches. All up by special train to Nicosia, people all along the line. Arrived in Nicosia and drove slowly in car to Council Chamber, crowds in the streets and all very enthusiastic. HE took the oath and inspected Somerset Light Infantry guard of honour etc. Drove to Government House. The most appalling house I ever saw, badly built, cold, terrible furniture, very depressing. I have a tiny little cottage which has possibilities. Started trying to get things straight which is an uphill job. Dinner with the C.S. who has a nice house. Rain.
