Ruby Jackson, wife of Skouriotissa Mines director Charles F Jackson, described the Nicosia Bazaar to her family back home:

We drove to Nicosia Saturday pm and came back Sunday pm. I wish I could give you a good description of our Christmas shopping bazaar, or name of shopping district, it’s made of tiny little shops all along very narrow streets, where oxen, camels, cabs and people go. It takes an age to barter with the shopkeeper for each item you buy… Nicosia is very pretty I think. There are lots of trees and good looking houses and a very nice park. There is also an old Roman wall all around the city. The streets are awful for the fine dust is still deep this time of the year. The drive there is beautiful over mountains and plains and through age old villages made of mud brick houses and old, old churches since before Christ. I bought curtains for all the house when I was in Nicosia yesterday. A native girl has stitched five pairs already and will do the lot for a few shillings.
