George Boustronios describes how the Venetians steadily took over the island:

In addition, on 26 May 74 ships arrived from Venice along with a captain, as well as top secret letters and 200 men, who had come to stay in Cyprus. As soon as he landed, he sent for and had Peter d’ Avila brought before him and showed him a letter he had brought from the Council of Ten that: “he must go to Venice forthwith!” as he had been ordered to “and likewise the mother of King James1” as well as the King’s illegitimate children, the count de Rochas and numerous other knights. And they were exiled from Cyprus.
