From the diaries of US Consul General Taylor Belcher and Edith Belcher:

Government house at half past six for cocktails and to witness TV show of Governor’s departure. Several drinks and then crowded into library for show – about thirty of us I think. George Savides and wife there, Henrys, Neales, can’t remember who all. I sat next to Savideses Lady Henry and in back of Sinclair. The Bourkes were also there. During show it showed Sir John saying goodbye to police force and referring to their ‘’policy of fairness with courtesy’’ and how he hoped they would remain loyal to this phrase, words to that effect. Sinclair muted to himself in somewhat sarcastic terms ‘’fairness with courtesy’’. As Toby said later, the show was all right but hardly appropriate for Cyprus consumption – an entire hour almost of the departure and all in English- saying goodbye to all the police, soldiers, etc. on the island…
