From Sir Garnet Wolseley’s diary:
Spent the day writing one despatch and not finishing it: the subject Maltese emmigration, and in it I have endeavoured to give a lot of statisticsabout land and its value and produce a value of labour, cost of farming and profits to be made by it. All this information I had to collect and had great difficulty in doing so for everyone here is very suspicious the moment you begin to question them as to their holdingsd, their taxes etc. In the evening rode into Nicosia to see the Beyuk Khan which will soon be ready as a Zaptieh Barracks and a prison: it is just suited for the purpose.
