The American missionary Lorenzo Warriner Pease was on a tour of the island and found himself in Paphos:

A fest of Venus upon her rising from the sea. The people of Paphos formerly celebrated it with lascivious rites. Foreign men were invited in marriage with Cypriot women etc. and visa versa. This still retained as a kind of Cyprus custom, when many go out to sea in boats and others remain on shore to look at them.
