“Island shocked by presumed EOKA killing of two British soldiers in civilian clothes. Both shot in back at close range noon yesterday Famagusta and died immediately. Security forces rounded up 600 people by afternoon – most of whom later released. Governor reimposed death penalty for carrying arms and throwing or placing bombs with intent to kill.”
