20 January 1835: Lorenzo Warriner Pease attended a Greek Orthodox baptism ceremony in Larnaca.
“The priests look on the ceremony very evidently as a complete farce for while the officiating priest was engaged in the reading of the service, we could see them frequently look up and laugh. All of the priests and people conversed when and as much as they pleased without any regard to what would be considered order and decency with us. Mrs. Pease was taken completely by surprise when she saw the infant brought forward and turned away from the sight very quickly. It caused not a little merriment amongst the people present.”
