"Down at 7.30 to the ship to meet the Under Secretary of State. (Robert Gilbert Vansittart, 1st Baron Vansittart (1881 – 1957)), Dr Drummond Shields, Mr Mathers his Parliamentary P.S. and Dowe of the C.O. Large crowds all holding Greek flags and shouting “Union with Greece” All up to Commissioner’s house and breakfast. His Excellency and I up to Nicosia and then I down to the station to meet our visitors. Vast and rather unruly crowds waving flags and shouting. Several flags thrown in the car. A zaptieh’s horse frightened by the noise reared and kicked the radiation in. Greek flags on all the houses. Tea party."
