“Today the Mohametan woman came about sunrise to mourn over the grave where were deposited the remains of her friend the other day. She continued about half an hour. Rested, and Lucinda and I visited the schoolmaster and afterwards his school. Grollos, our host, showed us some of his plates yesterday. He has a chest about three feet long, the bottom of which was covered with silver plates. His wife had several boxes of jewelry of costly description. Yet the people of Larnica live in mud houses and eat from the coarsest white crockery everyday. Their women are ignorant and the men to a very great extent. They have not a tavern in Cyprus.”
