Gladys Emma Peto arrived in Cyprus with her husband who was a member of the military, at the beginning of 1920 and stayed for a while. In 1926 she issued a travel guide on her stay in Cyprus but also in Malta which she illustrated herself. The original illustrations used for the guide, together with some others are today at the CVAR.

Activity one: In town a hundred years ago

Have you ever thought about how different to today's life was in Nicosia a hundred years ago? Although the buildings and the narrow streets remain almost the same, many things have changed.

Observe carefully the drawing of Gladys Peto and the contemporary image and think…

What is it that has changed and what remains the same in relation to:

  • people’s clothes
  • people’s occupations
  • animals
  • trees
  • the street
  • means of transport
  • the buildings
  • the shops

Now imagine…how will life be in town in a hundred years from now? Create a drawing of the town as you imagine it in the future!

Send us your drawings at education@severis.org

Activity two: A painting, a story

Gladys Peto’s drawing takes us back in time, in Nicosia of 1926. Now observe the drawing and look at the people one by one. Choose one of the characters and then close your eyes to imagine you are them.

Consider…

  • What’s the weather like?
  • What kind of clothes are you wearing?
  • How do you feel?
  • Who is around you?
  • What do you see?
  • What can you hear?
  • Where are you going and what will you be doing?

Did you know that…

Other than being an artist and designer, Gladys Peto also wrote children’s books which she would illustrate herself bringing her stories to life. She would also illustrate children’s books from other authors.

Observing the drawing, you could now write or record your own tale using imaginary names and events.

Send us your tale at education@severis.org

Activity three: A spring, Easter collage

Did you know that…

Gladys Peto’s drawings are influenced by the Art Deco artistic movement which in Greek translates to decorative art. The movement lasted from around 1925 to 1940 and influenced a variety of aspects related to design, such as architecture, fashion, furniture, jewellery, etc.

You could now create your own spring, Easter collage using Gladys Peto’s decorative patterns.

  • Download and print the frame which you can find HERE
  • Draw a spring or Easter composition (eg. A basket with eggs, Easter animals, flowers etc.)
  • Download and print the artist’s patterns PATTERN 1, PATTERN 2, PATTERN 3, CHICKENS
  • Cut out the patterns and stick them to your drawing as you desire!

We would love to see your creative collage at education@severis.org
