Description:

Arts and crafts started being produced in Cyprus around 1900. The frugal way of living did not allow Cypriots to possess paintings for decorating their walls and no local artists existed. But photography had become popularized and practically every home was proud to possess photographs of family members. These were placed within makeshift frames and decorated with amateur painting on glass. Flowers surround the pictures of the couple in an effort to make a more impressive decorative item for the wall. Similarly photographs were often placed on a velvet background and surrounded by floral decorations made from cocoons. The tradition continued in villages well into the middle of the 20th century.
