Description:

Theophile Mogabgab was a Francolevantine who lived in Cyprus. He originally worked for the Land Registry and in 1935 was appointed curator of the monuments in Famagusta. He compiled supplementary excerpts for the history of Cyprus to Cobham’s Excerpta Cypria. Having being trained as a topographer at the University of Beirut, Mogabgab often painted scenes of Cyprus. Famagusta was his favourite town. This is a view of the street along the side of the Ottoman school at the central square of the town. The street leads from the Venetian palace to the Sea Gate known today as liman yolu. The dome of the Ottoman school is seen on the right. Just in front, appears one of the two columns which stand left and right of the school’s entrance. The granite columns were transported there from Salamis. Legend has it that Marcantonio Bragadin, the Venetian defender of Famagusta against the Ottomans, was tied and flayed alive between these columns in 1572. The wall surrounding the school does not exist any more. Nothing speaks of the historical background of the scene to the mundane figures strolling down the street.
