Description:
The Anglo-Jewish artist David Bomberg visited Cyprus in 1948-49. He was invited to Lapithos by his friend Austin Harrison to recover from his depression after having lost the directorship of the Royal Academy. For Bomberg, Cyprus was the ‘jewel of the East’. The island stimulated him to paint some of his finest landscapes. He was particularly drawn to the Saint Hilarion Castle of which he produced some magnificent works where the castle and nature merged into each other. According to Richard Cork, ‘Bomberg’s palette has never been more tropical in its insistent use of brilliant ochre, scarlet, yellow and rose madder’. The history of St. Hilarion and especially that of Queen Eleanor, wife of Peter I of Cyprus, led him into painting over and over again the famous window of Saint Hilarion Castle.
