Places:

Cyprus

Description:

Of Russian descent, Olga Raouf came to Cyprus with her family in 1925. She taught music at the American Academy in Larnaca. In 1927, she married the Turkish Cypriot doctor Raouf Bodamyalizade. She is regarded one of the first Turkish Cypriot artists. Her style is of the traditional school of representational art with influences from the Russian school of art. The oil painting exhibits all the quintessential features of a typical Cypriot courtyard: the arch, the covered veranda, the clay pots for water, and chicken roaming in the yard. The use of white reflects the white-wash used in villages. Restricted use of bright colours, of red, blue and green, is juxtaposed to the white, thus creating an interesting and eye-catching effect.
