Description:
Gladys Emma Peto was an English artist, fashion designer and illustrator. She married Cuthbert Lindsay Emmerson of the Royal Army medical Corps and, during the 1920’s, she travelled with him to Malta, Cyprus and Egypt. An outcome of her travels was the book ‘Malta and Cyprus’ and ‘The Egypt of the Sojourner’ published by J.M. Dent for the Outward Bound Library. In her art deco style, she was clearly influenced by Aubrey Beardsley. This is a view of a busy street in Nicosia frequented by people and animals in their everyday life routine. A line of shops bearing the names of Greek owners are visited by passers by. Greeks and Turks, men and women, donkeys and hens make the crowd. People can be seen carrying baskets and sacks, others tending animals and a few sitting by leisurely and enjoying the spectacle. Although this is a crowd of town dwellers, the artist is slightly sarcastic in adding rural livestock and village bumpkins. She is condescending in her view of the local inhabitants, although this is masterfully concealed under a comic element. The latter is more clearly manifested in the posture of the young woman who appears at the foreground.
