Description:
Codrington spent much time in Cyprus and travelled all over the island. His brushes and palette were employed to glorify the light and the colours of the landscape and to record most of the important monuments. It was only well into the 20th century that artists started depicting the ancient ruins of Salamis near Famagusta. This is due to the fact that little was visible before scientific excavations started in the 20th century. The view is of the agora as marked by a number of ancient columns standing. This is the only view after Amathus that was impressive enough to instigate the artists’ interest.
