Description:
Freda Blois was taken around Nicosia by Rupert Gunnis, ADC to Sir Ronald Storrs then Governor of Cyprus. Paphos Gate is one of the three remaining gates in the walls of Nicosia. The British built Police Barracks over the Gate, made obvious in the picture by their white walls and green shutters. The figures are dressed in long mantles, covering the body from head to toes, an indication that these were Turkish women. The street is not asphalted yet and animals wander freely around. The big eucalyptus tree still stands today in the same place, but the Gate is hardly used anymore. The picture is of the exotic and picturesque so much sought after by the British public.
