Northern Cyprus Kantara

Creator:

Anonymous

Tarih:

ca. 1900

Inscriptions:

Inscribed on verso by pencil and not the artist's handwriting: Northern Cyprus Kantara

Description:

This watercolour, depicts part of the northern Cyprus coastline with the Kyrenia mountain range fading in the background. The castle of Kantara stands in the middle of the picture while a group of rooftops appear sliding down the hill. Kantara was a summer resort of inhabitants of Famagusta who would spend most part of summer up in the mountains enjoying the coolness of Kantara forest. The artist has captured the wonderful vegetation in exquisite colours combining them with the blue sea. The vista projected from the standpoint of the artist creates a mysterious atmosphere, and projects an almost fairy tale hamlet, sunk in lush surroundings crowned by a dark, mysterious castle. A very similar engraving appears in the ILN.
