Description:

Major General Sir Matthew William Edward Gosset entered the army in 1856, fought in Egypt, Burma, India the Zulu and Boer war and travelled extensively in the Middle East 1870-1892. His watercolours come from an album which he compiled of scenes from India, the Middle East and Scotland between 1873 and 1891. The watercolour portrays a scene of a busy street in Nicosia. Greeks and Turks appear together, distinguished only by their clothing. The houses are two storey with the characteristic Turkish kiosks and overhanging roofs. The road is but a mud path. Elements of Gothic architecture still remain within the structure of the houses. The Gothic door in the foreground is such an example. Most urban houses had spacious courtyards demarcated from the street by high walls.
