Description:
The sepia drawing focuses on the Venetian column in Serail square in Nicosia. The artist is standing in front of the administration and court buildings looking opposite where once stood a row of shops and houses. Today these have been replaced by modern office blocks. The Venetian column in the middle marks the center of the town. During those years, the British chose to use it as point zero to demarcate distances all over the island. Cars do not appear yet whereas the use of carts drawn by animals and phaetons frequent the streets. A few figures of locals populate the drawing while in the distance one can discern the two minarets of Ayia Sophia.
