Gwendolen Frere was the daughter of Judge Bertle Frere who arrived in 1898 and took up judicial duty in the British administration of Cyprus. She was an amateur artist who executed a series of watercolours of Nicosia and Kyrenia. The view is one of the most popular, painted by many artists, and shows the main street leading into the walled city. Wooden posts define the perimeter of the road. Just behind them, one could have seen the walls.
