Description:
The interest of this map by Blaeu lies in a series of costumes depicted in the periphery of the map. These costumes refer to the various races of Europe and include the English, French, Belgian Castellan, Venetian, German, Hungarian Bohemian, Polish and Greek costumes. On the top of the map of Europe are small vignettes of various cities including Amsterdam, Prague, Constantinople, Venice, Rome, Paris, London , Toledo and Lisbon. Although Cyprus features in the map as part of Europe, no costumes are attributed to the island unless one assumes that the Greek costume applies also to Cyprus. This can be suggested since the costume is basically Ottoman and both Greece and Cyprus were then under Ottoman rule.
